Spring

Well, yes, Spring has arrived although not quite as much as in this photo. I’ve been a bit awol from my blog with other things filling my time like looking for a job, visiting model homes and planning a wedding in Italy.

I have however survived the winter in Colorado (although I’ve had a few folks call this a fairly mild winter), and I find that thing I like least is the wind. When the wind is really blowing, it’s like being in a Santa Ana only not quite as warm, usually. It’s in the mid-60s today, but should be 10 to 15 degrees cooler tomorrow and then back up like today on Wednesday. It’s true that if you don’t like the weather here all you have to do is wait a short time and it will change.

I am looking forward to being able to do more fun stuff outside and in the higher elevations as the weather warms up.  And the longer hours of daylight are always welcome. I love to sit and enjoy the evenings.

Thought I was never one to go with the accepted way of doing things, it appears that I will have a June wedding, primarily since June 1st is the only day we can get married in Florence because of an Italian holiday. Never saw myself as a June bride, but whatever. It expect that my bouquet will have seasonal flowers.

That’s all the news from here on the edge of the prairie.

This article talks about the relationship that women and cats have. But it doesn’t explain why my cat was so attracted to boxes.

A very interesting take on how the movie industry got to where it’s at.

Update: This was one ugly game for the Aves. I hear that the team has some injury issues (and lost another in the second period last night). But it was a fun night, and thanks to Jackie who gave Stan and I the tickets.

The boy puts on shorts and fills the bird feeder. Weird, the people of Colorado.

So even though it’s been circulating since last week, I guess I need to make a formal announcement on the blog – Stan and I are engaged. We  have talked about such things before, but this came out of our thoughts about the logistics of a wedding. We have been planning a trip to Italy in May/June with friends for nearly a year, and though it started as a joke, the idea of getting married on the trip began to make sense. We’re already spending money on the trip, and neither of us wants to spend big bucks on a wedding, and yet Italy would be special. The ceremony will be the week of May 28th-June 6th (we’re still doing the logistics on exactly when). So that’s that plan as it stands.

For the folks who live in SD/CA, we’re going to have a party, likely in July, where everyone can wish us well. And if anyone wants to be in Italy, we’re working on arranging a larger villa in Florence, so others can come if they’d like to. Let me know, cause Margie is making the arrangements and we want to make sure we have room for everyone. And we hope to have the ceremony on You Tube, if not a live feed. Technology to the rescue!

So thank you to everyone who has wished us well. We’re very happy and keeping warm in the cold Rocky Mountains.

At last check it’s around 2º although the sun is trying to break through every so often. The frost on the inside of the window frame is a bit disconcerting, but I know why. There are quite a few more cars in the parking lot than on a not-quite-as-cold day. Most schools are out though Stan said the roads were pretty good at 6:30am (he finds the school closures wimpy, and talks of riding his bike to school in this weather). The yard guy salted the paths around 8am, so the paths look clear.

Best for me is that I don’t have to go out today. The cable folks are coming on Thursday; TV again after 3 1/2 weeks.

Update: Sun on window has melted frost.

I missed it…

Because of move etc, I didn’t watch the Golden Globes. I did hear that Ricky Gervais was quite snarky, which I probably would have enjoyed. However, he said something at the end of the awards that appears to have hit a nerve. This is an article about what really got people mad.

Initial Impressions

So as I start my second full week in Colorado, I have a few observations-

  • I’m really tired of getting shocked by everything I touch. I’m blaming my shoes, at the moment, rather than my electric personality.
  • Yes, it’s colder than San Diego, but most of the days the high temps have been 45-55 degrees, which is basically wear a jacket weather, unless you’re in the sun. I know it gets colder, but so far, not too bad.
  • Moving in to the space already occupied by another person could really be difficult if the other person hasn’t made a reasonable amount of space. Lucky for me, that’s not been a factor. Stan made more room that I was expecting.
  • Boulder generally has slower speed limits than my part of San Diego, but the real difference I notice is how much slower locals drive in parking lots.
  • Boulder has many smaller specialty stores than my part of San Diego, but that’s not surprising since I lived in a lower income neighborhood compared to here. Even so, the natural section of the Safeway is about the size of half of my old Ralph’s.
  • Dressing up is a relative term on the front range – this is still cow country. Make sure you’ve got a good pair of jeans – that should cover most situations.
  • Service people of all types are very nice and will usually try to strike up an actual conversation rather than perfunctory ‘Have a Nice Day.’
  • As much as I miss San Diego and my hometown, this adventure seems to be going along great.
